Alex – Class of 2014

Where are you currently studying or working? What do most enjoy about this place?

I am currently studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville. What I enjoy most about Gainesville is that it is a relatively quiet town (makes it easier to study) while at the same time there are plenty of places to see and activities in which to engage.

What major are you studying and what are you looking forward to in your future?

My major is electrical engineering. I am looking forward to taking some digital application classes next semester such as Digital Design and Microprocessor Applications 2 so that I can further develop my skill set in designing, troubleshooting, and understanding complex devices.

How did DSA help prepare you for where you are now?

During my time at DSA, I was challenged both academically and spiritually. Regarding academics, my teachers encouraged me to work hard and think critically. They were always willing to help me when I struggled with coursework or was curious about the material that was being covered. DSA provided an environment where there were many extracurricular activities offered to students. Balancing those extracurricular activities such as basketball and the National Honor Society allowed me to develop my time management skills, which has served me well in my collegiate career.

My classmates also challenged me to be more social. My friendships with them taught me to express myself more often and to be willing to reach out to others as they did for me. I learned from them that while one can go through life alone, friends can always make the journey fun and interesting.

But what DSA best prepared me for was dealing with hardships by trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ. Learning about God every day through morning devotions, religion class, and daily conversations allowed me to develop my Christian faith and rely on God as my refuge and strength. Understanding my relationship with God and being taught how to maintain it gave me the confidence that God has done it all, so I do not need to needlessly worry about the challenges of this life but rather follow His will.

What other fun updates can you share about your life?

During the last spring and summer and I did an internship at TechToybox, anonprofit that helps startups develop proof of concept prototypes.

I am also a member of Unplugged, the campus ministry group from Zion Lutheran Church, the WELS church in Gainesville. Unplugged has devotions every other Monday. This semester we examined idols in culture such as success, technology, politics, and romance. We also had our first “deconstructing the culture” event where we watched the movie Iron Man and discussed the worldview and theological implications of superhero culture. Since the first showing was successful, I am now planning future screenings/discussions with my brother, the president of Unplugged.

What piece of advice would you give to current high school students at DSA?

I would encourage them to take advantage of the opportunities offered at DSA such as sports, especially basketball. If they can keep their grades up during the season, then they will be in good shape for the work that lies ahead in college. I would also encourage the students to grow in the faith because in most colleges they will not hear God’s Word every day. It will be up them to continue studying the Word and go to church.

Anthony – Class of 2016

Where are you currently studying or working? What do you most enjoy about this place?

I am currently studying at the University of Florida. What I most enjoy about this place is the challenging academics. I love to push myself to grow, and my school allows me to do just that.

What major are you studying and what are you looking forward to in your future?

I am studying Finance at the University of Florida. I’m looking forward to completing an internship this summer so that I can gain experience before my graduation in the following summer.

How did DSA help prepare you for where you are now?

DSA instilled a standard of discipline within me that has served me well throughout my time in college. College can be challenging for many students because they are granted so much freedom in regard to class attendance and even homework (which is sometimes optional). This newfound freedom can lead some students to manage their time poorly and neglect their studies, causing their grades to suffer as a result. Thankfully, during my time at DSA, I learned the importance of fulfilling my responsibilities both within and outside of the classroom. This lesson has proven to be instrumental during my time at the University of Florida.

What other fun updates can you share about your life?

I was elected to be the President of my church’s campus ministry group for the upcoming semester. I have already served as the Vice President for this past semester, and I am looking forward to glorifying God with this responsibility in the future.

What piece of advice would you give to current high school students at DSA?

I would advise them that if they have any worries about what the future holds for them, they should let go of these concerns. These worries about an uncertain future can overwhelm anyone, particularly students. They should remember, though, that God will be with them through it all. No matter how challenging life can seem, our God will always guide us through our troubles. Lastly, they should keep this in mind: as Christians, we have complete victory in Christ our Lord. In the larger picture of life, what do we really have to lose? We have already won everything important through Christ, so there is no need to be afraid for what the future will bring for each and every one of us.
