We live in a life of distractions. Whether it be school, work, family, or other factors in our day to day lives, ??stress is inevitable. We stress and we worry about the most seemingly irrelevant things; we lose ourselves in what we want and in what could be. We all have hopes for our lives — hopes of getting a promotion, hopes of being able to pay for college, hopes of raising our kids the right way, hopes of living another day. We live our lives in hope. Dum spiro spero, as the saying goes, ???While I breathe, I hope.??? But what is hope?
Hope is the longing for things to get better.
On Monday, December 3, almost 300 women gathered together at Advent by Candlelight for one purpose — hope. The hope that we have as individuals, the hope that we have for our lives, but most importantly: the fact that Jesus IS our hope. Over and over again the idea that Jesus Christ is our living hope was emphasized, both in scripture and in song. The idea that no matter what we hope for, no matter what we fear, no matter what happens in this life, we need not worry. It has all been taken care of, we have been taken care of. We have been forgiven, and we are loved. We find hope and love in our Savior; the same Savior who came all those years ago for us. The true reason for the season.??
The night was a beautiful atmosphere of love and celebration of Christ. There were many factors throughout the night which allowed for a beautiful magnitude of emotion and connection. Some of these include the unique decoration of the candle-lit tables, a bilingual scripture reading, and what seemed to be most moving — the beautiful voices of the singers.
The most compelling aspect of the night, though, was the ???niche??? of the event: women only. There is a certain level of connection and emotion that comes from 300 women who gather for the same purpose. Matthew 18:20 says, ???For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.??? This verse holds true, as the spirit of Christ was present that night.??Jessica Spiegelberg, who helped organize the event, agrees.?? “It was a meaningful evening filled with the message of hope only Jesus can bring.”
