Divine Savior Freshman Wins Top Journalism Award

by Michael Babler, Director of Instructional Technology

The student media and journalism program was established four short years ago at Divine Savior Academy. ??In that time, the program has grown and produced award-winning work, as recognized by the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA).

Network58, the student media group at Divine Savior, publishes work across scholastic media platforms, enabling students to practice real-world skills that easily transfer to journalistic careers, or otherwise. Through their work in The Golden Legacy newsmagazine, Shark News Network video broadcasts, and online at network58online.com the student journalists communicate current events from the school, the community, and the world-at-large to the student body and school community.

The Golden Legacy has been a silver-ranked publication in three of its four years, as recognized by FSPA. ??In addition to the publication???s ranking on the whole, many individual student articles, drawings, photographs, and design layouts have been submitted to FSPA???s annual contests. ??This year, of 13 entries, seven were awarded Honorable Mention, one Excellent, and two All-Florida, the highest possible ranking. ??Besides being given an All-Florida ranking, one student was also awarded Best of the Best (top honors) within the category.

Freshman Nina Poulos drew a political cartoon to accompany an opinion article, ???Political Views Hit Close to Home,??? in the first edition of this year???s newsmagazine. ??The cartoon and article were based on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump???s commentary on immigration and border control. ?????Hearing different people???s opinions and seeing what was on the news [led me to] create the drawing,??? Poulos said. ??The topic hit ???close to home,??? as indicated in the title, since a majority of students at Divine Savior Academy have come from other countries. ??But for Poulos it wasn???t a matter of passion for the topic that led her to draw the award-winning cartoon. ?????I didn???t even know that you could get an award. I just thought I was drawing something for The Golden Legacy,??? Poulos said.

Divine Savior Academy and Network58 congratulate Nina for receiving the honor of Best of the Best in FSPA???s Editorial Cartoon category!
