DSA High School Athletics: Fall Sports Wrap-Up
By Dan Unke, High School Athletic Director
The falls sports season wrapped up this Saturday, November 9th, far later than expected.
The regular season ended weeks ago, but for the very first time, both our volleyball team and our cross country team had the opportunity to participate in postseason competition. After serving two years of a probationary term (required for all new teams), our athletics program has received full member status of the FHSAA, the Florida High School Athletics Association.
As full status members, our fall sports teams now have the opportunity to not just participate in regular season competition, but also postseason play. Both our cross country team and our volleyball team capitalized on this opportunity by competing far into the postseason. An extraordinary feat for our first year of eligibility!
The Divine Savior Cross Country Team sent two runners to the regional meet in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, November 2. Representing our girls team, Elena Mueller finished 29th out of 84 runners. From our boys team, Guilherme Pereira finished 15th out of 99 runners, which earned him a spot at the State Championship Meet in Tallahassee, Florida. On Saturday, November 9, Guilherme was DSA???s first ever state qualifying cross country runner. He finished in the top 30% of runners. Congratulations to Coach John Althoff, Guilherme Pereira, Elena Mueller, and our entire cross country team!
Our DSA Volleyball Team had an equally exciting venture into the postseason. On October 24th, Coach Brianne Loberger and Coach Kristina Troge led the DSA girls to the school???s first Florida 2A District 15 Championship. With this exciting win under their belts, the team qualified for more postseason play, winning both their Regional Quarterfinal and Regional Semifinal matches. On Saturday, November 9, they played in the Regional Championship game for a trip to the State Tournament. Although they did not win, their first journey into the postseason was a remarkable one. Congratulations to both the coaches and the players of the 2013 Volleyball Team!
Now that fall sports have wrapped up, our athletic program is excited to begin the winter season with girls basketball, boys basketball, and the inaugural year of our boys soccer program. Thank you for supporting DSA Athletics.
